What am I, you ask? I'm a New York public school Math teacher with a New York State teaching license in high school Mathematics. The problems arise when I try to teach that to SIGHTED kids – I've recently come to the conclusion that apart from the Reservation, the only way I can be treated like a MATH TEACHER is if I teach at the School for the Blind. Everyone else seems to think that this Choctaw INDIAN is a "black" woman first and then they doubt my ability in Math or any of the sciences. What I get, because I'm dark skinned, is that because I "look Black" I must be too stupid for my field – for where I went to school and what I'm licensed to do. That's why. If people didn't think I was "black" they would have no reason to think I look "too stupid for Math."
